Macular degeneration is a common eye condition that typically affects patients over the age of 50.
Risk factors for macular degeneration include:
- Age (the most significant risk factor)
- Genetics
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Race: Macular degeneration is more common in Caucasian patients
- Family history
- High blood pressure
- Sun exposure
It is important to note that one or more risk factors does not necessarily mean that an individual will develop macular degeneration. Regular eye exams with a retina specialist can detect macular degeneration in its early stages, and alert you and your physician to the need for preventive measures and/or therapy.
At Envision, we specialize in retina care. At your first consultation, Dr. Esparaz will spend 30 minutes or more with you to review your retinal tests and develop a personalized retinal treatment plan, including lifestyle modifications.
