Macular Degeneration Awareness Month

“I woke up and couldn’t see my wife’s face anymore, that is when I knew something was wrong.”

~ 65 year old patient with new onset wet macular degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss over 60 in the United States. Over 20 million Americans are affected by this disease each year. That is why the month of February is dedicated to macular degeneration awareness. Here at Envision Ophthalmology and Wellness, we are a dedicated retina center of excellence, and our primary focus is macular degeneration.

There are two types of macular degeneration- the dry and wet forms. Dry macular degeneration is the most common form. It causes calcifications, called drusen, to accumulate at the center of your vision. In about 10% of patients, blood vessels start to grow in areas of drusen, called Wet macular degeneration. Wet macular degeneration can cause rapid central visual loss.

Fortunately, we have excellent treatments today for wet macular degeneration. The mainstay therapy are anti-VEGF injection treatments. These injections deliver vision-saving medications to the retina.

At Envision, we offer intravitreal injections from the comfort of our office, conveniently located off of 271. We will walk you through the process, step by step, to help you understand more about your vision and the treatments needed to save it.

Follow along for more tips on how to use your lifestyle to reduce your risk of macular degeneration!
