Dr. E. Shanika Esparaz, double board-certified in ophthalmology and lifestyle medicine, is a fellowship trained medical retina specialist and cataract surgeon.
A native of the greater Cleveland area, Dr. Esparaz attended Northwestern University and majored in Anthropology in Human Biology. She studied abroad in Mexico City learning about Public Health and carries her global health experience into her career today. She received her medical degree from Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society for exemplifying exceptional humanistic qualities through service and commitment to patients. She was also selected for the prestigious Alpha Omega Honor Society (AOA).
Dr. Esparaz completed her Ophthalmology training at Boston University Medical Center where she was selected as the first medical retina fellow. Today, Dr. Esparaz is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery for NEOMED and is an active member of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Women in Ophthalmology.
In addition to being invited to speak at numerous conferences across the country, Dr. Esparaz has been featured in notable media outlets, such as Parents Magazine, and recently provided medical commentary for Netflix’s hit show Virgin River. In 2021, she was named as “One to Watch” in Ophthalmology by Millennial Eye and Allergan.
Dr. Esparaz is a mother to two toddler girls. She is married to her college sweetheart, and they have a Golden Retriever named Agassi, named after the famous tennis player. She enjoys spending time with her family, baking, fitness, tennis, Netflix, and educating students and patients on social media.
