Dry macular degeneration is a chronic eye condition that typically affects patients 60 years and older. It causes gradual deterioration of the macula, the central part of the retina, which is responsible for sharp and detailed vision.
Until now, there was no approved treatment for AMD. Retina specialists traditionally have recommended lifestyle modification and supplements for prevention of dry macular degeneration. These include:
- Nutrition supplements for patients with moderate dry macular degeneration, called the AREDS 2 vitamins.
- Lifestyle changes such as a Mediterranean diet, exercising regularly, quit smoking and wearing UV protective sunglasses.
In February 2023, the FDA approved the first injection for dry macular degeneration. It is called Syfovre (pegcetacoplan). It works by blocking a component of the complement system, part of the immune system that is thought to contribute to the development of geographic atrophy.
Clinical trials have shown that it can reduce the rate of progression of dry macular degeneration when given monthly or every other month.
